Sat 15th November I had just walked passed the sign saying 'cyclists must give way to pedestrians at all times' at the Kangaroo Point cliffs end of the walkway, when a speeding cyclist knocked me over. I'm 61 and 70kg. Had I been older/more frail, or a young child it could have caused serious injury or even death. He hit me THAT HARD! My umbrella went straight into the water - as a little child may have done - and my shoulder has been injured. Thankfully I didn't hit my head, so felt relatively OK at the moment. I've since taken pain killers every day for shoulder pain. I'm confident it will heal with time. I notified Brisbane City Council who told me to contact police. I called, then went into Cannon Hill Shopping Centre where a 'note' was taken. I felt somewhat 'dismissed' and wasn't confident Southbank would be notified. I again notified police who called today and suggested I email Southbank directly to ensure the relevant police were aware of the problem. The next two people I spoke to had BOTH had incidents on the walkway. One was riding a bike and was knocked off her bike by racing cyclists, the other had 7 stitches in his leg after being hit by a scooter. Cyclists could be a good mix if they ride sedately and consider the unpredictability of pedestrians, young and old. There doesn't seem to be a speed limit through the river walk? I honestly believe it's a tragedy waiting to happen if cyclists aren't slowed. Perhaps physical barriers that cause them to slow right down to negotiate?
